Twenty-two years later and the Truckers Parade Against Cancer is still working hard to raise funds in the war on Cancer.
For the first time, in 2023, the organization decided to do a car giveaway to raise funds in addition to the Truckers Parade held each October.
According to Co-Founder and team member Shelia Jones, the car giveaway raised a total of $57,600. In all, for 2023, the organization raised $179,000.
As for the Truckers Parade, Jones said, “It is hard to explain the feeling in the air when you witness just how many lives have been touched by this disease.”
Each October, drivers and passengers put up banners on their trucks for the event, each one marking the name of a friend or family member who fought cancer.
The parade route travels approximately 15 miles throughout the county before ending at Southside Virginia Community College in Keysville.
The event has raised closed to $2 million dollars over the last 22 years to fund research for new and improved cancer treatments, support cancer patients and efforts to demand better coverage of cancer fighting drugs and treatments through insurance and government support.
