It’s about more than raising money. That’s one thing Relay for Life and American Cancer Society officials wanted to make clear. To be recognized on a national level, a Relay for Life team has to show several things. You have to inspire others, you have to show love for your community and you have to help raise awareness about cancer prevention. The Truckers Parade Against Cancer (TPAC) did all of those things, earning the 2024 Relay for Life Nationwide Team of the Year Award.
This past year, TPAC raised $180,636 for the American Cancer Society, enough to be fifth overall. Since its founding in 2000 with a goal of raising $10,000 and bringing together 40 trucks, TPAC has grown into a signature event. In 2024, the parade featured more than 200 trucks carrying more than 300 banners and fundraised through sponsorships, auctions, and raffles.
“Congratulations to TPAC for being named the 2024 Pat Flynn Spirit of Relay Nationwide Team of the Year,” the American Cancer Society said in a statement. “Since 2000, this incredible team has raised over $2 million for Relay For Life of Charlotte County while honoring loved ones and raising awareness about cancer prevention in rural communities.”
A focus for Truckers Parade Against Cancer
TPAC’s impact extends far beyond fundraising. The parade, featuring trucks with banners honoring or remembering loved ones affected by cancer, raises awareness about cancer screenings, early detection, and American Cancer Society resources. The team’s mission is especially vital in rural communities, where access to care is often limited.
“Our number one goal is to raise funds for cancer research, and number two is to honor those who are fighting and never forget those we’ve lost,” said Sheila Jones, co-founder of TPAC. “We also honor and salute the trucking industry for their generosity and commitment to supporting the fight against cancer.”
Suzy Lawrence, Nationwide Relay For Life volunteer co-lead, surprised the TPAC team with the news of their nationwide recognition. The team’s success, driven entirely by volunteers, exemplifies the heart and spirit of Relay For Life. This milestone sets the stage for an exciting 25th anniversary celebration in 2025.
