A long-anticipated playground project in the Town of Charlotte Court House is finally gaining momentum, with construction hoping to start later this year. The play space for the Charlotte County community has been proposed by the town council to be built at 350 George Washington Highway– a project more than a decade in the making.

Aimed at children between the ages of 3 and 12, the playground would offer a safe and accessible area for recreation, providing a much-needed addition for local families according to town officials.

“This has been a long-term goal of the town council,” said Charlotte Court House Town Manager Sara Crawford. “We want to provide a safe, accessible play space that supports families and gives kids a place to enjoy their childhood close to home.”

Funding and public hearings

The project is slated for funding through the town’s proposed fiscal year 2026 budget, which allocates $50,000 towards its development. That budget will be the subject of a public hearing on Monday, June 16 at 6 p.m. at the Town Office. There, residents will have a chance to share their thoughts or ask any questions.

While the playground is the immediate focus, the Town is also taking a look at future recreational development. A proposed amendment to the zoning ordinance would allow pools, parks, and playgrounds as conditional uses in the business zoning district. While there are no current plans for any pool or park to be built, Crawford says this amendment in zoning would give the town flexibility for such plans in the future.

Feedback from both the public and council members has so far been supportive, and officials are hoping to hear more during a joint public hearing on Monday, June 23 and 6 p.m., also at the Town Office. That hearing will address both the zoning amendment and the conditional use permit needed for the playground’s construction. Residents are encouraged to attend and participate. “We welcome questions, comments, and support as we move forward with this community project,” Crawford said.

Construction could begin soon

Pending approval and permitting, the town hopes to complete the playground by fall 2025. For more information, residents can contact Sara Crawford at (434) 542-5781 or reach out to any Town Council member.
