Vehicle crash leaves one dead

Virginia State Police (VSP) is investigating a fatal crash in Amelia County that involved a Drakes Branch resident.
According to VSP, at 9:32 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 24, police responded to a motor vehicle crash on Route 360 at the intersection with Route 307.
The preliminary investigation indicates that a 2011 Dodge Caravan driven by Earl W. Clary, 72, of Wakefield, was crossing Route 360 from Route 307 when it was struck by a 2020 Volvo dump truck driven by George A. Dirks, 40, of Drakes Branch.
After striking a sign, the Dodge came to rest in the eastbound lanes of Route 360. The Volvo struck the guardrail in the median.
Both Clary and an adult male passenger were taken to a local hospital due to life-threatening injuries. Clary succumbed to his injuries.
The seat belt status of the occupants of the Dodge is unconfirmed.
Dirks was wearing a seat belt and did not report any injury.
